This week on your homestead
Your homestead
Barter with neighbors — both bring something, both say yes, both confirm. List what you have spare; nothing is fabricated here.
Nothing listed yet. Post what you have spare — eggs, produce, fuel, tools, or a hand — and it shows up here for neighbors to trade for.
Neighbor listings will appear here as Seededly grows in your area. Trading is barter — goods for goods — with a two-sided handshake so both people commit before anyone shows up.
A walkthrough of how a barter goes — tap through to see the steps. Your real listings live back on Local trade.

Store enough, and be able to make any source safe to drink.
{{ wGapNote }}
{{ wFilterNote }}
Plan 1 gallon per person per day — about half for drinking, half for cooking & hygiene. A family of 4 for two weeks ≈ 56 gallons; a 55-gal barrel ≈ ~14 days. Rotate stored water every 6 months, and keep a filter for any backup source.
Picks — Best value: a countertop gravity system. Cheapest that works: a Sawyer Squeeze. Most complete: gravity for daily + a Sawyer for go-bags + RO if your tap carries metals.
Turn the harvest into winter — safely.
⚠️ The rule: low-acid foods are pressure-can only; tomatoes need added acid. Methods follow USDA / NCHFP tested guidance.
You need both — fats that take high heat, and good everyday fats.
Fats are the hardest food group to grow, so plan to stock or render — roughly a gallon of cooking fat per person a year.
Could you keep the lights — and the freezer — on?

Pair a gas generator with a battery bank. Charge the bank in short bursts, then live silently off the inverter — only fire the generator up again when the batteries run low. An inverter generator throttles to the load, so kept lightly loaded (about a third of its rating) it sips fuel with the least engine stress. Power mainly a fridge and small electronics off the bank and you can stretch close to 2 days on a single gallon — versus a generator running around the clock.
Solar & wind: clean, silent, no fuel — but run the payback first. Years to break even ≈ system cost ÷ yearly fuel/grid savings. Home solar often lands ~6–12 yrs; a small panel + battery just to guard the freezer pays back fast in food you don't lose. Wind only earns its keep with steady, open-site wind.
What your homestead gives back — valued at local grocery prices, from what you actually log.
Counted from your logged harvests and flock. As you log more, this grows. The "still growing" figure is the projected grocery value of crops in the ground now.
That's the projected grocery value of what you've planted. Log a harvest and it becomes real dollars saved — tracked here all season.
Track what you keep — your flock and herd feed your protein, dairy and eggs.
A laying hen gives ~4–5 eggs a week at peak (spring–summer) and tapers toward winter as days shorten. Your {{ lvHens }} hen(s) ≈ {{ lvEggsWeek }} eggs/week in season.
A timed coop light (14 hrs of light) keeps hens laying through the short days of winter.
Backyard eggs run about $2.50–3.00/dozen in feed once hens are laying, versus $4–5 at the store — so a small flock roughly breaks even to modestly nets out, and earns its keep most in scraps eaten, manure for the garden, and eggs on hand when the store runs short. The real win is resilience, not riches.

What you have, what to save, what to order before spring.
Nothing saved yet. Add the seeds & varieties you have on hand so you know what to order before spring.
Tip: onion, parsnip & spinach seed is short-lived (1–2 yrs) — buy those fresh. Tomato, bean, pepper & squash keep 4+ years if cool & dry.
Seed you logged in Harvest lands here automatically — with how to store each kind for next sowing.
Easiest saves: beans, peas, tomatoes & lettuce — let a few go fully ripe, dry the seed, store cool. Garlic: replant your biggest cloves each fall.
